When J and I were planning our trip to Bolivia and our mountaineering adventure I was very much in the dark about where to begin clothing/gear-wise. This was my first experience climbing mountains or at any real altitude and so I relied heavily on J’s experience and did some serious reading. I found that the […]

At an elevation of 13,325 feet (~4060m), La Paz-El Alto airport is the highest international airport in the world. The low air density means reduced lift, so airplanes have to takeoff and land at higher speeds and the effects of engine power and air braking systems are substantially reduced. Many aircraft types, especially wide-body airplanes, […]
On our last day in La Paz we decided to ride the new Teleférico public transit system, the longest aerial cable car system in the world. We travelled through every stop, though a number of additional lines are scheduled to open from now through 2020. The upper portion of the Sky line opened just two […]
We left Sajama village this morning at 5:30am for our last shot at a 6,000m peak on this trip. Acotango (6,052m) was supposed to be our one day acclimatization climb before Sajama. A snowstorm blocked that and high winds eliminated any prospect of summiting Sajama, so we decided to focus on Acotango on our remaining […]
It’s a beautiful day, if not an odd one, in Sajama village. We’ve been snowed in for over a day in what I’m told is highly unusual weather here. The snowfield usually doesn’t start until after high camp (5,700m) but here it is in the village (4,200m). Unfortunately, all of this means we’ve missed the […]
Heavy snowfall conditions on the summit forced us to delay climbing Acotango this morning. We were to climb Acotango as part of the acclimatization process before attempting Sajama over the next three days. We’re in a holding pattern until our guide decides the best course of action.
The Tayka Desert Hotel (Tayka Hotel del Desierto), in the Bolivian Cordillera, is at an elevation of about 4,550m or about 15,000 ft. The Guinness Book of World Records and a number of online articles have cited the Everest View Hotel in Nepal, at about 13,000 ft, as the highest hotel in the world. The […]
Tierra Atacama Hotel and Spa is located on the Chilean Altiplano with incredible views of the Licanabur volcano. The hotel is located approximately five minutes by car from the center of San Pedro de Atacama. The closest airport is Calama which is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes from the hotel on well paved highways. […]
