I landed in Nouadhibou, Mauritania yesterday, a bucket-list destination and a milestone. Mauritania was the 100th country I’ve traveled to. Having spent 3 straight days in the air I’ll say only that the approach was extraordinary and security tight. I drew the attention of the authorities, who were confused that I would transit through their country, and didn’t like digital boarding passes. I learned to avoid the military personnel roaming the airport asking for documents. They were generally polite but ever suspicious, and it felt like only a matter of time until I came across the wrong one.
