Tierra Atacama Hotel & Spa: A slice of heaven in northern Chile | Review

Tierra Atacama Hotel and Spa is located on the Chilean Altiplano with incredible views of the Licanabur volcano. The hotel is located approximately five minutes by car from the center of San Pedro de Atacama.

The closest airport is Calama which is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes from the hotel on well paved highways. Calama is about 2 hours north of Santiago and the airport is serviced by major South American carriers.

We spent four nights enjoying all the hotel has to offer.

Rooms:

We stayed in one of the “Oriente” rooms which boast unobstructed views of the Altiplano and Licancabur volcano. They have floor to ceiling windows and open widely onto the patio out-front. The en-suite bathrooms have both an indoor and outdoor shower. The rooms are minimalist in their decor but wonderfully comfortable. At nightly turndown they leave a different type of chocolate made by a Chilean confectioner with an accompanying description of its origin and taste components. These were incredible!

The other room class, the “Poniente” rooms, are a bit larger than the “Oriente” rooms but the views from those rooms are obstructed by the block of “Oriente” rooms in the foreground. Despite this, you can see the volcano rising above the buildings. In the opposite direction, facing west they also have terraces that look over the hotel gardens.

Dining:

A review of Tierra Atacama would not be complete without a mention of their wonderful restaurant. When booking, you can opt for a full board option which includes each meal and the house wines, or the bed and breakfast option. Breakfast is a large buffet with plenty of hot and cold options. Their croissants were wonderful! At lunch and dinner a three course meal is offered with multiple options for each course.

If you choose the B&B option the three course meal is available at both lunch and dinner as well an alternative a la carte menu. Overall, the prices are reasonable and there is plenty of variety.

The bar also deserves some praise! The house wines are all sourced from Chile and are some of the most wonderful wines we’ve ever had on vacation, let alone from a house list. The bar is extremely well stocked and the cocktail list is extensive.

Excursions/Activities:

The excursions are one of the highlights of Tierra Atacama. They offer a variety of hikes through the surrounding landscape catering to all levels of fitness. They also offer trips on horseback, guided bike adventures and a truly wonderful stargazing experience. We went on a wonderful hike following a beautiful river through the Guatin Gatchi Valley. The guides are friendly and knowledgeable.

A daily excursions are included in the full board offering. If you plan on relaxing and not going on a daily outing then the B&B option may be more cost effective especially since the food is reasonably priced.

Tierra Atacama offers a full service spa. There is an outdoor infinity pool, a jacuzzi and an indoor heated pool. The outdoor pool is a bit chilly but great for jumping into after the hot tub! The spa and pools are open until 10 pm daily. The spa also has a very well stocked gift store which contains plenty of high-end outdoor clothing as well as local gifts.

The hotel offers free, on-demand shuttle service into San Pedro de Atacama throughout the day. Bikes are also available if you wish to cycle into town.

We had a wonderful trip to Chile and the Tierra Atacama was a wonderful jumping off point for the rest of our vacation. From there we traveled into Bolivia to explore the lagoons and salt flats.
